cross-stitch: blast, the quilt

i'm excited to be sharing my first downloadable cross-stitch pattern today!

holiday 2012 gift exchange

after stitching up my own itty-bitty adorable cross-stitch version of blast, the quilt as a gift for the lovely Susan of crafterhours, i knew i couldn't keep this one to myself. you may remember this pattern as a quilt i designed with Thomas Knauer's Asbury (actual quilt pattern still in the works). since the quilt was an enlarged version of my original block design, it was a fun experiment in scale to shrink it down to the tiny.

i stitched my mini-blast with waste cloth on a print from Lotta Jansdotter's Bella collection and then centered my piece in an embroidery hoop for hanging. to imitate the look of the original quilt, i used a variety of hues of the secondary colors (blues and tans).

on the back of the hoop, i tucked the excess fabric under a circle of felt and added a little heart. i used a fabric glue stick to hold the felt circle in place and and tacked down the heart with one little stitch.

once it was all wrapped up, i added one of my stocking girl holiday gift tags :)

i hope you're inspired to stitch up your own mini blast! when you do, make sure to share pics in the imagine gnats flickr group.

  3. That's so beyond beautiful and I am so impressed! I am currently working on a quilt of my own and it has taken me over a year so far! I keep telling myself that it will be worth it when it's finished! It would mean a lot if you checked it out!

  8. This is lovely! I will always have a soft spot in my heart for cross stitch. It's truly the first "crafty" thing I did. I remember sitting on my canopy bed when I was 12 and making up little cross stitch samplers. I made a swan for my mom and it was so wonky and messy yet she hung it in the kitchen and it stayed there close to 15 years. Anyway, your pattern is lovely and I love the idea of incorporating quilting block designs into cross stitch projects. I'm printing this out and sticking it in my ideas folder!

  9. Rachael, this is kind of an odd question. How did you relate the scale of the cross-stitch design to the scale of the fabric design? Did you try out some different scale-to-scale combinations, or did you "get it" right away? The scale relationship between the two designs, cross-stitch and fabric, is one of the really striking things about this piece. I'd love to know your thoughts about it! Thanks, and thanks for your blog!
