full of cheer

for some reason, i woke up this morning feeling all kinds of cheery. it's not like i normally wake up super cranky (well, not most days anyway) but today i just woke up with a smile on my face and nothing could shake it. and trust me when i tell you that the world tried.

for example, i spent my lunch at the post office. for the third time in the last week. and the lady behind me in line desperately wanted me to agree with her that the post office is basically doing everything wrong and we shouldn't have to wait so long in line. so i offered to let her go ahead of me, and even then she insisted that a gentleman in the other line should really go ahead of her and i was kind of unsure of how to proceed with that one. she solved that for me when she hollered across the post office to him, but he declined and she moved ahead to purchase her stamps and i hope her day got a little brighter (though she seemed pretty determined that it not).

this afternoon at work, i spent quite a bit of time on hold with various customer service personnel, all of whom seemed to think my name is "rita"... ?? one of the conversations actually went just about like this:

"rita": will you accept a faxed copy of the tax waiver form?
marcos: was it faxed to you?
"rita": (pause) it was emailed to me.
marcos: oh. (pause) emailed? (pause) i'll need to check. may i place you on another brief hold?

while on hold, i realized that i could have it faxed to me if necessary. we do have two fax machines in my office, after all. but thankfully marcos was happy to inform that they will, in fact, accept the faxed copy. so that's good news. i'll spare you the part where i was informed that their receipt of document A required that i also send them document B, but when i asked for a copy of document A i was informed that they hadn't received it. that was fun, and ended with me having to explain to marcos that "rita" is spelled R-A-C-H-A-E-L (and he was able to fax me a copy of the aforementioned document A).

but even after this, i was cheery. laughing about the silliness of it all, even. so i took all of this as some kind of omen that i should address our christmas cards. which may or may not knock the cheer right out of me ;) they're certainly not getting finished tonight, but at least they're started.

oh, and i feel like if you've read this far you probably deserve a silly picture. i found these on my camera this weekend... the girls posing on K's birthday. (with a polar bear, if you can tell, that was a present from my lovely grandparents. inside was a polar bear necklace which K had to put on immediately, of course. apparently polar bears require silly poses.)

happy tuesday and keep it cheery :)

press, cut, sew *repeat*

back in august, i posted about the kind of quilt i wanted to make with little folks voile i had been collecting. hmm... i see that i also posted about that dress i wanted to make myself which never quite materialized. and really, there is no way that this post was over three months ago. how can time possibly be speeding along so quickly?
dear "too much to do/not enough time" panic attack,
let's reconvene in, say, february?
thank you,
rachael
when you have a vision of an idea for a quilt (and especially when you've never made a full-size quilt before), it's good to have quilty friends and relatives who can point you in the right direction. i owe big thanks to Alexis of materials and method, Jessica of a little gray, and Stephanie and Julie at Sewn Studio for telling me what things were called (stacked coins, who knew?) and looking over the quilt plan i drafted in excel (posted here).

as soon as i had everything figured out, my stack of voile ended up at the bottom of a stack of projects and it was left to just sit around feeling wonderful for a few months... until, that is, i decided that thanksgiving would be my personal sewing holiday. we had a very low key celebration of thanks this year (in fact, i stayed in my pj's all day!) with just our little family, and i gave myself permission to work on whatever i wanted. aren't those days fun?

making this quilt really is a (sometimes tedious) matter of the same steps over and over again: press, cut, sew. first i sewed solid borders onto the sides of all of the pattern pieces (that will become the "coins"),

little folks voile quilt

then i cut each of those into strips (varying from 2" to 5" in width).

little folks voile quilt

after a little time trying to figure out how to lay out 108" worth of strips, i managed to get them arranged,

little folks voile quilt

 and began sewing them together.

i greatly underestimated the amount of time it would take to carefully pin and sew together strips of voile. and perhaps greatly overestimated my ability to enjoy something that requires being really careful. once i get all of the strips sewn together (i'm about 1/4 of the way right now), i'll need to cut those sections and sew them to the large strips of solids i'll have carefully cut.

perhaps i can find a way to just hang the strips on the wall for now, as i suspect the finished quilt is still a while away ;)

where my sewing happens

in the midst of a sewing project last weekend, i thought it might be fun to snap a few pics of my sewing space (aka our bedroom) and share them with you. so i made up this insane awesome collage with labels for most everything, and promptly realized that its similarity to where's waldo is a bit frightening, overwhelming, ridiculous... and it conveys pretty much the spirit of most of my sewing adventures ;)

i thought perhaps not everyone else would appreciate such a whirlwind of experience, so i went ahead and broke it up into a few sections. those pics, some insights into my sewing process, and an ikea hack shelving idea after the jump.

birch trees

here's a project from some time back that i've been meaning to share. despite the fact that it is actually painted on the wall and i see it every day, i keep forgetting. things start to blend in, you know?

anyway, last march i decided that we needed birch trees on the wall. i'm not sure why, but in typical rachael fashion i just sketched them out and started painting before i really had time to change my mind or think too much about it. this type of action always ends in one of two ways: genius or disaster. thankfully we ended with the former this time, though i doubt i could ever replicate this ;)

birch trees wall

after sketching the trees right on the wall, i painted them with acrylic paint. the coverage fairly thin as i was using small brushes for the most part, so it took 2-3 coats in most places. after also painting on the darker details, i painted over the trees with a semi-gloss acrylic sealant. it's held up well, though i should probably confess that i don't exactly clean the wall, well... ever.

birch trees wallbirch trees wall

for the birds and leaves, i ironed interfacing to the fabric and then cut out the shapes. to adhere them to the wall, i sprayed the backs with quilting spray adhesive and stuck 'em on! to be clear, i have no idea whether or not that is a good idea. none of them have come off the wall in the last eight months, though i am starting to see a few places that aren't stuck quite as well anymore. we keep saying that we should take the leaves off for the winter, but i'm not quite sure how well they'll come off or what the wall will look like behind them. if i try, i'll let you know.

birch trees wall

all in all, a relatively simple DIY and it's nice to have a mural (of sorts) on our wall.

have you ever painted on or stuck fabric to your wall? do tell!

giving thanks

happy thanksgiving! while we're all busy cooking, eating, visiting, and watching football napping, i thought i would share with you a little something for which i'm giving thanks today: this knitting girlie.

k's first knitting kit and project

for K's seventh birthday, we gave her a knitting kit. she's been begging me to teach her how to knit and this seemed like the right time to teach her. she's started a scarflet and is doing really well so far (i only knit the first two rows and the rest is all her).

the yarn and needles in her kit came from a local yarn shop, McMullin Fiber Co., the adorable messenger-style bag (complete with corduroy pocket) was made by my friend Tara of Robot Inside, and i received the flower pin as part of the handmade holiday gift swap from Kim at Plumage Design. the cat, well, she just showed up one day ;)

today, i am thankful to be blessed with two amazing girlies who love to create. i feel fortunate that they both get to grow up in a home where handmade is appreciated and we all have lots of love to share. (which reminds me... i actually updated my about me, so feel free to check that out.)

a very happy thanksgiving to you and your families! i'm thankful to have you here along my crafty journey :)

roll-up tote bags

after my quilting oops the other night (about that here), i decided to take a wee break from my little apples to work on some roll-up tote bags, which i've been meaning to do for some time now. since september, to be specific, as soon as i saw this fab tutorial from Stumbles & Stitches:

beyond the fact that i just really wanted to make one for ME, i thought this would be a great gift for my friend Donna, who is one of the five facebook friends to whom i owe a handmade gift "sometime" in 2011... and, my friends, 2011 is almost over. i wanted to make something for her that would coordinate with the custom imagine gnats brooksher bag (in moda fabrics, below) that she received last year for christmas:

i really like the pop of linen on the bags that Jenny showed in the tutorial, so i wanted to incorporate that into this bag as well. for the main exterior fabric and handles, i used the same floral as the contrast fabric in the brooksher (freebird by momo for moda #32241).

roll-up tote one

and (the exciting part for me!) i used my very own handprinted bird fabric for the exterior contrast piece. these birds were actually the very first block print i did and it's neat to see it as part of a FO. the fabric is a cotton canvas, which i think lends a similar look to the linen that Jenny used in her bags. i did use linen for the interior... though it could be the exterior if she chooses, as the bag is completely reversible. i used jenaveve linen (in gray) by valori wells, which is kind of a ridiculous fabric to use for a lining (at $17/yard or something), but sometimes you just have to do these things.

roll-up tote one

very pleased with the bag for Donna, i thought i would go ahead and whip up that bag for ME... but then Nick really liked it and i thought how nice it would be for him to have something like this. and i thought about how lovely that linen would be with a bold echino print... that right there is what got me. so i put aside the fabrics i had chosen for my bag, and cut into some echino in my stash for Nick (very proud of my stash usage lately, btw)

roll-up tote two
roll-up tote two

i especially love a happy accident... i happened to cut out the helicopters fabric (from spring 2011 collection, i think?) in such a way that both sides of the fabric have the mustard stripe, so it wraps nicely around the sides.

and here are both totes, all rolled up. perfect for throwing in your coordinating purse. or man bag ;)

rolled-up totes

if you're looking for a simple handmade gift for the coming holidays or any time, these bags are a simple, quick sew. and *bonus* chances are, you already have everything you'll need to make them. to make gift-giving even easier, Jenny included with the tutorial a card showing how to roll the bags... so head over to Stumbles & Stitches and get started.
