scrappy stockings and giveaway day

so, you knew i couldn't go an entire weekend without sewing anything, right? yeah, me too... but as my hand is still recovering, i couldn't really undertake anything that required too much precision (or, more importantly, nothing that i expect anyone to pay me for). i've been looking for any opportunity to make up some scrappy stocking ornaments (tutorial here). i know now that this was not the best time for that. remember two sentences ago when i mentioned "too much precision"? yeah, well, this wasn't my best work (and the zig-zag stitching attempt is downright silly) but they're still cute. maybe next time i'll just buy some from jenny's etsy shop.

anyway... i ended up with some echo scraps (from my "sekret exchange" present!!) and was determined to do something with them, so here they are:

echo scrappy stocking ornamentsecho scrappy stocking ornamentsecho scrappy stocking ornamentsecho scrappy stocking ornaments

i think that if you look at the zig-zags from far enough away, you can't tell what a disaster the stitching is. maybe? well, these two will definitely be staying right here at home to hang on our tree.

and now for the giveaway. tomorrow is giveaway day, which kicks off an entire week of fabulous crafty giveaways! (a big thank you to sew mama sew, where you can find a link-up to all kinds of giveaways) i plan to spend some time entering, and maybe i'll find some new blogs too. isn't that always lovely? speaking of which, if you're new here, welcome and feel free to look around. ah, yes, and leave a comment for your chance to win this lovely voile infinity scarf! (more details below)

  1. Hey! Lol! This scarf is my fav! As far as ornaments go, I have no crafty ability, but my great-grandmother gave left me an ornament made from tin. It's a carousel, and when the lights on the tree heat it up, it spins around. I love it. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!

  2. Love the echo stockings, and they don't look amiss at all! My poor mother has a collection of angel ornaments I made from q-tips and scraps of lace and ribbon. As a crafty child I never let lack of proper materials hold me back! Love the scarf, that one is my favorite color of all the amh pastry line voiles.

  3. I'm not entering for the scarf, but just saying "hey" and hope you feel better! I think the stockings are cute. Believe it or not, I have been totally stressed about making my "sekret" gift ... baking is really my talent, and I've been feeling like whatever I make won't live up to whatever cool things everyone else is making. Is that completely nuts, or what?! Ugh, deep-seated inferiority complex surrounded by creative people!

My brothers and I each have tiny wooden soldier ornaments in different colors. I have really good memories about looking for those three little guys in the tree every year! Now they hang in different trees, in different states, but they still hold the same great memories. Definitely one of my favorite ornaments!

Hard to say what my favorite ornament is. Definitely the handmade ones by friends and family!

PS: Forgot to tell you we got your Christmas card. Beautiful! Thank you. You'll be receiving our emailed family greeting, ahem, when uh, the photos are taken.

  6. One of my favorite ornaments is a little crocheted stocking I made when I was in high school. It is red, white and green and measures about 3 inches tall. Now, if I could just find the pattern I could make a few more for our tree.

I love, love, love these scarves and I am going to get one today for my very hard to shop for mom-in-law! I think she will love it!

My favorite ornaments don't even hang on my own tree yet- my mom made them when I was little They are called Dolls of the World and each one is from a different country! They are so detailed and cute! My mom was a crafter in the 70's and 80's and won all these awards for her ornaments and Barbie clothes, so I guess my creative mind comes from her! and she taught me how to sew...!

Oraments? Well, my favourite ornament is a wax one that my mom gave me. She had a whole set of them and when my sister and I were young we were expected to treat them like glass if we touched them, and they always seemed extra special. My mom gave me (and my sister) one from the set a few years back, and it's still my favourite of all. (Although this year I made a bunch of Matryoshka doll ornaments for my family, and they might be my favourite just for the moment...)

  136. I have a crib set bought by my Grandparents in the 50's. However they had very little money, so bought a few pieces every year, so we have Shepherds twice the size of The Holy Family and the three Kings are tiny! It has also gotten rather roughed up over the years, but it has had such a journey that I have to put it up each year!

My favorite ornament is an angel my mother made as a tree topper when I was a little kid. She replaced it with a store bought angel she liked better a few years later so when I moved out I talked her into letting me take the handmade angel.

  155. My family has a tradition, ominously called "The Box" in which the person who last received the box gives an ornament and a poem to another family member. It's continued for 28 years and counting! akmajor (at) gmail (dot) com

I love handmade Christmas ornaments. The crazier they are, the better. Currently our tree is covered in ornaments from my childhood and my husband's childhood. Lots of hand-embroidered birds, crocheted animals and even a festive felt seahorse! (or possibly a Loch Ness Monster.. I'm not really sure). Thanks for the giveaway!

  159. Lovely scarf! Every year my Mom would take us to the Hallmark store and let us pick out an ornament for the tree. And when we've gotten married, she's fished through the Christmas boxes and pulled out all of our ornaments so that our first Christmas tree would have ornaments on it. Now I love looking through my ornaments with my kids and showing them what I picked at their age or showing them what I made in first grade for example. :)

  168. Those ornaments are so cute! And the scarf is lovely. :) A funny ornament story: there are two ornaments in my parents' collection that they've had since before they had kids, and that my sister and I used to fight over when we were little. We both wanted to be the one to put them on the tree. And now as grown-ups whenever we come to those two ornaments we look at one another awkwardly and then have one of those "You can put it on..." "No, you go ahead..." moments. So ridiculous!

  170. The first year my husband and I celebrated christmas, our christmas tree fell over at 2 in the morning. My husband was already awake and stood the tree back up and then realized he was stuck so yelled for me until I woke up. It's funny to me now, but not at the time.

  175. One year my mother made gingerbread ornaments for the tree. They had extra spices and were for decorating. The house smelled delicious for all of christmas. The next year they came out again and we used them again. And some of the children may or may not have nibbled on them. This went on for probably 5 years. Yes they lasted that long and yes people still nibbled on them. Sounds gross now...

  180. An ornament anecdote... One year I made Christmas ornaments that looked like gingerbread people. They weren't real gingerbread. Like there was three cups of salt in the recipe. While we were out of the house, our basset hound ate several of them from the tree. All that was left was the ribbon. You've never seen a dog drink so much water! Thanks for the chance to win your lovely scarf.
