in case you missed it in this post, today begins the kcwc (kid's week clothing challenge) fall 2011 hosted by elsie marley. i had grand plans this evening to just whip up two of these adorable audrey capes by Simple Simon & Co (tutorial available here on Project Run and Play) that i came across via pinterest. see how that all comes together so nicely?
i've been thinking about making these capes for my girlies to wear over the sleeveless dresses i bought them for the wedding (yes, it's in january). and i decided this would be the perfect project to kick off the week, so i ran to joann's at lunch today to look for gray wool, lining fabric, and some buttons. despite the columbus day crowd (did anyone else completely forget today was a holiday?), i did manage to find some gorgeous gray wool suiting (40% off even). i decided to go with pink for the lining, mostly because i'm hoping that the color convinces the girls to actually wear the capes (B informed me tonight that she will not be cold and doesn't need a cape).
number 32. when i took my number, they were on 16. needless to say, i had a while to browse for buttons.
as the collar is really the only part that's really done, here's a close-up of that. below is the entire first cape so far, obviously in desperate need of a good pressing and finishing. take special note of the pack of cats watching from the end table in the background. it really is a zoo around here.
i can't wait to get them finished up and share some pics with you of my favorite models! still on the list for this week: oliver + s family reunion dresses, flannel pjs, a vintage-inspired gathered neck shirt i've been working on a pattern for (inspired by another pin you can see here), and i'm sure some other stuff i've already forgotten.
so don't forget to check out the pin-did project link-up tomorrow on the modern marigold and you can check out tons of other great kcwc projects and pictures in the elsie marley flickr group.
update: you can see the first finished cape here.

those came out beautifully! I love the pink lining. And Yay for fabric on sale!
