a scrappy stocking

Craft Hope Spreading seeds of hope one stitch at a time from the Craft Hope website: "Craft Hope is a love inspired project designed to share handmade crafts with those who need them. It is our hope to combine our love for crafting and desire to help others into a project to make a difference around the world.

For Project 14 :: Christmas in Dixie we have partnered with Christmas in Dixie for Tornado Survivors to provide handmade stockings for the 12,000 families that lost everything to the tornadoes. Yes, 12,000 families that will not be pulling the Christmas ornaments and decorations out of their attic. 12,000 families that have to build their lives again. We know we cannot do everything, but we can do little things. And these little things make a BIG difference."

this is the stocking i will be sending in for this project (yes, slightly after deadline). they have already collected over 1900(!) stockings and are hoping to make it to the 2000 mark.

my stocking was inspired by some paper collage ideas i have been collecting on pinterest and i thought would translate well to fabric. i was also looking for something that i could use for K's first sewing machine project... so i cut out a muslin stocking shape for her as well and let her pick through the scrap pile for pieces to sew on collage-style.

i was hoping this would be a good way to show let her practice sewing straight seams and just getting the hang of working the pedal, while also a project that we can actually use for something and she can be proud to see hanging on the mantel. it's been frustrating at times for sure, but she's starting to get the hang of it (when she concentrates, at least). the toughest thing for her to remember seems to be when to have the foot up or down, and when to have the needle up or down when lifting the foot (which, by the way, she insists is NOT called a presser foot. it is a sewing foot... oh, that one). with a little more work, she should be able to finish this up rather soon :) here she is, hard at work:

have you started working on any crafty holiday projects? it seems like this year has flown by and christmas will be here before we know it.
