first audrey cape finished

Audrey cape

i feel so productive! i mean, who cares that most of what i did today was browse flickr and visit tons of blogs to look at everyone else's projects ;) i was determined to finish the first cape tonight (you can see the beginnings of it here) and managed to even get it done before dark. btw, who said that this whole dark thing could start happening so early?

Audrey cape

and i was so excited to have K model her cape... sadly, she seems to have caught the wave of whatever chest congestion/cold thingy we've all been passing around to each other around here. but no worries! the audrey cape is perfect for when you need to cough. even if you're just trying to cough and your mama is taking your picture, which makes you laugh and then cough harder. not that i'd know... just a theory. ahem.

i did run into a few issues opportunities with the finishing. for starters, my machine apparently doesn't make buttonholes for buttons that are 1.5" across. who knew?

so i made an improv buttonhole just using a satin stitch, and it worked pretty well. i meant to sew the two vertical lines closer together, but i think it's just fine how it is.

the other issue i had was with the lining. i was using a jeans needle because the wool is so thick, but when i did the topstitching i wanted to do it with the lining side up so that i didn't catch or fold it in the seams. i whipped out my trusty walking foot (love that thing!) and it worked like a charm except for the fact that the larger needle didn't do wonders for the lining fabric.

i'm sure that i'm the only person who will even notice this. but, still, any suggestions or helpful hints as to how to avoid this on the next one would be much appreciated!

after the girlies went to bed, i did a little work on an impromptu project, a mixed up shirt for K. i've been meaning to dig into my treasure trove of old t-shirts and start refashioning for a while and tonight seemed like as good a time as any. more about that shirt tomorrow, but here's a preview:

can't wait to see what everyone else has been up to tonight!

  2. I think you could get away with a universal needle for the wool. There are some needles called sharps that are probably smaller than universals, but I have been loving them a lot lately. The cape is gorgeous!!gorgeous!
